Exopulse Mollii®

Electrical Stimulation Suit for Adults & Children

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is a medical assistive device for use with adults and children for neuromodulation, consisting of a pair of trousers, a jacket and a detachable control unit. The garment includes 58 imbedded electrodes, positioned to stimulate 40 key muscles throughout the body, and which is programmed according to individual needs. Through low frequency electro stimulation, EXOPULSE Mollii Suit reliefs chronic pain and relaxes spastic and tense muscles safely and simply. It also activates muscles to regain control and prevent disuse atrophy and it may also increase local blood circulation.

So, how does it work?

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is used to stimulate the antagonistic muscle to a muscle that is spastic. If for example, the biceps muscle is spastic, the suit is used to stimulate the triceps muscle. By a natural reflex mechanism called reciprocal inhibition, the biceps muscle will subsequently relax. Relaxing the muscle enables a gradual improvement in function. Moreover, the suit facilitates subthreshold stimulation by preparing the muscle for contraction, thereby reducing the nerve signal strength required by the user to generate a muscle contraction.

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit also reduces chronic pain, in part through the gate control theory, which asserts that non-painful input such as the electric stimulation of cutaneous nerves, prevents pain sensation from traveling to the brain. Moreover, the suit’s unique ability to generate multi-stimulation to the central nervous system, combined with the low frequency used, may also inhibit pain by activating opioid receptors in the spinal cord and the brainstem. Spinal serotonin levels may also be increased during and immediately after using electro stimulation.

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is a safe and simple assistive device that can relief chronic pain and help recover motor functions faster. The device should be used for one hour every second day, and preferably together with physiotherapy, training, activity or movement. The effects are individual and can last for up to 48 hours and possibly longer.

Frequently asked questions about Mollii®

Who is EXOPULSE Mollii Suit for?

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is an assistive device for all ages of people with muscle pain, spasticity and other forms of motor impairment due to CP, MS, stroke, other brain injuries, fibromyalgia or other pain syndromes.

How does the EXOPULSE Mollii Suit work?

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is a functional garment that consists of a pair of trousers, a jacket and a detachable control unit which sends electrical signals to the user via 58 electrodes on the inside of the garment. The EXOPULSE Mollii Control Unit is individually programmed for each user by combining the electrodes in various ways. The health care professional prescribing the suit uses a computer program to adapt the active electrodes and the intensity (which muscles are to be activated by means of current). The settings are then saved in the EXOPULSE Mollii Control Unit, making it simple for the device to be used at home.

What happens in the body when EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is used?

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit uses low level electric current to produce basic tension in the muscles. The current stimulates the antagonist to the spastic muscle. If, for example, the biceps is spastic, the triceps is stimulated which in turn makes the biceps relax. Relaxing the muscle enables active movement and a gradual improvement in function. The physiological mechanism is called reciprocal inhibition. EXOPULSE Mollii Suit has also been shown to reduce pain. An possible explanatory model is the gate theory, which describes how stimulation of nerves in the skin can prevent pain signals from reaching the brain.

What sizes are available for the EXOPULSE Mollii Suit?

The suit is available in 37 sizes, for children, women and men’s sizes. Children (cl): 104, 110, 116, 122, 128, 134, 140, 146, 152. Women: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL. Men: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL. Unisex: XL Short

Is EXOPULSE Mollii Suit user-friendly?

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is an assistive device for neuromodulation and it is easy to use in the home environment. If you can dress up with an ordinary garment, you can dress up with EXOPULSE Mollii Suit. There is a button for on/off and a button for play/ pause. A single push of the button starts muscle stimulation, which proceeds automatically for 60 minutes.

How often should EXOPULSE Mollii Suit be used?

The device should be used for one hour every second day, unless otherwise specified by your healthcare provider, and preferably together with physiotherapy, training, activity or movement. The effects are individual and can last for up to 48 hours and possibly longer.

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit safety

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is not to be used with electrical implanted devices or medical devices that are affected by magnets, such as shunts. Consult a doctor in the event of: bone fracture, malignancy (cancer), infectious disease, fever, pregnancy, rashes, skin problems, epilepsy, cardiovascular disease or other types of related conditions; and if EXOPULSE Mollii Suit is used with other medical devices such as cochlear implants. The product must be used according to the user manual.

What is included with EXOPULSE Mollii Suit

Supplied with: Jacket, trousers, control unit (with bag), belt, laundry bags and user manual.

EXOPULSE Mollii Suit washing instructions

The garment can be hand or machine washed at 40°C/104°F, using delicate wash, without fabric softener. Wash regularly (at least once every other month) to keep fabric and electrodes clean. The control unit must be disconnected from the suit before washing. Wash the jacket and pants separately in the two laundry bags supplied. Do not iron or tumble dry the garments. The garment can also be steamed washed. We recommend to use LG Essence Style S3WF. Please note that steam washing does not remove stains.
